Hundreds of SEA Games 2015 closing ceremony ticket holders turned away

Organisers are now offering refunds to paid ticket holders who ended up missing the show.

If you were able to watch the closing ceremony for the SEA Games 2015 held in Singapore tonight, you're one of the fortunate few.

Mothership.sg has learnt that hundreds of ticket holders, some paid and some complimentary, were stuck outside after their allocated gates for entry were closed abruptly, and without explanation.

Numerous accounts from disappointed and angry ticket holders detailed being continually directed to different gates from the ones stated on their passes, having to sit on the steps despite paying for seats, not receiving a door gift pack and having to miss the bulk or the entire ceremony altogether owing to these inconveniences.

Freelance photographer Aeron Chew, 44, arrived at the Sports Hub, where the ceremony was to begin at 8pm, at 7:15, where he said he queued half an hour for security clearance.

He then told Mothership.sg he was herded between three different gates, all of which were closed to entry.

"I asked the temp staff (positioned at the gate) for more details, (and) he told me it was full and they had oversold the tickets," he said. "They also said they were going to try to squeeze all of us in, but when I looked at the situation and the crowd, it looked quite impossible — hundreds of us were all crowding outside different gates. There was no resolution and no full-time manager could help us."

Other comments on the official SEA Games 2015 Facebook page detailed various other complaints.

"There were elderly and children among the crowd waiting outside the gate," wrote QinNing Koh. "The poor volunteers got lambasted by people who were angry from waiting without much explanation as to what was going on."

"The show was about to finish when we finally managed to get in," wrote Darren Tan Shun Qiang. "Very disappointed with the management. Was so looking forward to the closing ceremony!"

Chew, who had brought his elderly mother to watch the ceremony, said he saw many foreigners among the crowd of spectators stranded outside the stadium as well.

"When I saw them, I felt so ashamed that we organised such a big but chaotic and disappointing event," he said. "I was really shaking my head at the organisers — it didn't feel good to be a Singaporean tonight... and I brought my mum home because I could see the crowds were turning angry, before something might happen."

Facebook user Evelyn Tansy also shared a photo of snaking queues outside the stadium, sharing her experience on Mothership.sg's Facebook page.

Here's the official response from the SEA Games folks:
