The 90s were a great time for video games. We had to physically be in the same living room as our friends if wewanted to kick some digital butt. That was way more fun than holing ourselves up at home to play online games.

Here are 10 games that embody the old school fun of the 90s which will make you wish you still kept your old consoles:

1. FIFA series / Winning Eleven / Perfect Eleven

If you were crazy about console football games then you know the flow of popularity between these games over time was Perfect Eleven --> Winning Eleven --> Fifa --> Winning Eleven --> Fifa.

It didn't matter which game you are loyal to, just so long as there was a football game to own your friends at.

Gaming with your friends need not always be a head-on blood bath. Side-scrolling bash-em-ups were the de facto games we turned to. But, we usually end up quarreling anyway because some greedy friends would take all the power-ups and health potions.

3. Sonic Wings / Raiden / 1942

These shooter plane games were HARD. They were designed to gobble up tokens at the arcade. But when you have a friend who owns the console game, the afternoon would be a fun-filled day with unlimited 'continues'.

4. Sonic

Close your eyes, think hard and I can guarantee that if you've played this game, you'll still remember how the game sounds like especially when you collect or lose coins. Who doesn't love a good speedy blue hedgehog?

Street Fighter 2 started the craze for fighting games. Kids everywhere all pretended that they could perform the hadoken in real life. Only because they cannot pronounce the hurricane kick.

We cannot leave Mortal Kombat out of this list, because it changed the way people viewed video games. The violence sparked controversy and questioned whether video games were meant only for children or there could be an adult market for it.

6. Counter-strike 1.6

This is the game that created the LAN Shop craze in the late-90s. Before there was CS, gaming was usually confined to small groups of two to four friends. CS made gaming a truly social experience when up to 20 people crammed themselves into a small shop and start shooting each other up.

How many times have you brought a home t-shirt to change out of your school uniform, in order to play at LAN shops?

Muscle men rocking big guns shooting aliens didn't have hyper-sexual undertones back in the day. It was awesome.

9. Handheld games - Western Bar / Brick Game

Games back then did not require you to invite multiple friends to unlock stuff. You just needed some AA batteries and you're set for hours.

10. Digimon / Tamagotchi

Digimon and Tamagotchi were revolutionary in the sense that the game ran continuously, but you didn't have to glue your eyes to it every single moment.

It was a great game to keep in your pocket. You can sneak in some gaming when the teacher was writing stuff on the chalk board.
