POLITICS

1. Will the General Elections (GE) be held this year?

No. The government will be busy organising SG50 events and the upcoming 28th SEA Games in Singapore (June 5 – 16). The government will also be busy with the implementation of MediShield Life, which will come into effect in 2015.

The most likely period is between September to December 2015, after the feel-good effect from 50th anniversary celebrations.

On Dec 12. 2014, Prime Lee Hsien Loong said Singapore’s next GE will not necessarily be when “everybody is expecting it”. If everyone's expecting GE to be held between September to December 2015, we can infer from PM's hint that it would not be held this year. - Martino Tan

2. Will there be a Cabinet reshuffle this year?

Yes. There has been a cabinet reshuffle every year since the last General Election in 2011. The last reshuffle saw the promotion of Tan Chuan-Jin and Lawrence Wong to full Ministers at the Ministry of Manpower and Culture, Community and Youth.

Since it is clear that the fourth generation political leadership would include Ministers Heng Swee Keat, Chan Chun Sing, Tan Chuan-Jin and Lawrence Wong, PM might swap portfolios among the young Ministers for them to gain valuable experiences helming different Ministries. Moreover, PM is likely to strengthen his team for the next General Elections. For instance, he might add more back-benchers to the front bench.

In the last reshuffle in April 2014, PM Lee said that he "expect(s) to do further reshuffles from time to time, to ensure that we always have the best team for Singapore". Expect PM Lee to do so before he calls for the next General Elections. - Martino Tan

3. Will home property prices continue to fall this year?

Yes. Higher interest rates in 2015 will affect investors' ability to hold on to their numerous properties.

The implementation of additional buyer's stamp duty (ABSD) and total debt servicing ratio (TDSR) will contribute to a reduction of our housing buyers' demand of property in Singapore. Housing prices will continue on the downtrend till the government relaxes some of the cooling measures. - Ryan Cheang

4. Will there be more large protests at Hong Lim park this year?

Return_Our_CPF

No. No large protests have occurred since the Return Our CPF 'heckling' incident occurred in late September, as NParks canceled the approval for Return Our CPF's planned fifth protest in October.

The organising duo behind Return Our CPF - Roy Ngerng and Han Hui Hui - may be barred from Hong Lim for some time, since NParks has stated that it will not approve any further applications made by 'individuals under investigation' until their cases are concluded.

So it may be peace on the green, for now. It is likely that Ngerng and Han will continue their protests once the court case surrounding the 'heckling' incident is concluded. - Ng Yi Shu

5. Will the planned high-speed rail (HSR) between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur be located in the city centre?

PM_Najib

No. A decision will be made this year and three possible sites -  Tuas West, Jurong East and the city centre - had been identified.

There were three hints provided by the government about the possible site.

Hint # 1: On 8th April 2014, PM Lee said that Jurong East is set to become a very major transportation, economic and financial zone for Singapore.  The HSR will complement the government's vision in transforming Jurong Gateway into the largest commercial hub outside the central business district.

Hint #2: During last year's National Day Rally, PM Lee said, "One day, the High Speed Rail may come to Jurong ... and I've told (Malaysian) Prime Minister Najib (Razak) that in Singapore, why don't we site the terminus in the Jurong Lake District. So we're discussing with the Malaysians...We haven't settled this yet, but if we get the High Speed Rail terminus in the Jurong Lake District, then that will make Jurong a truly exciting gateway to Singapore."

Hint #3? Check out the URA Masterplan 2014. The likely site is zoned as a reserve site / jurong town hall road - Ryan Cheang

6. Will Singapore win more than 50 gold medals in the SEA Games?

28th SEA Games

Source: SEA Games Facebook

Yes. The golden number this year is 50 - and for very obvious reason. The last time Singapore hosted the Games in 93, the Republic won a record 50 gold medals. Mainly because of the irrepressible Golden Girl Joscelin Yeo who won 9 golds. So we are hoping Team Singapore can go one up: 51 gold medals.

Recently, Lim Teck Yin, chairman of the Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee (Singsoc) executive committee said Singapore should win more than 50 medals. And this target hinges on this generation's Golden Boy: Joseph Schooling. - Tan Xing Qi

7. Will national swimmer Joseph Schooling be the most bemedalled athlete at the SEA Games?

joseph schooling

Yes. Schooling was Singapore's most bemedalled athlete at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar with five gold medals and a silver. Bet on him winning at least six gold medals and breaking a few SEA Games records along the way. - Martino Tan

8. Will Lions XII win the Malaysian Super League?

No. The team is not much stronger than last season but they should do better when Shahdan Sulaiman recovers from his broken leg. That said, they still don't have a good striker.

It's basically the AFF Suzuki Cup squad minus Hassan Sunny, Hariss Harun, Shahril ishak, Baihakkhi Khaizan and Shaiful Esah. However, there are some exciting newcomers like Christopher Van Huizen.

At the very best? We'd say third or fourth. - Lim Wei Xiang

LIFESTYLE AND ENTERTAINMENT

9. Will there be more cafes opening up in 2015?

Cafe

Yes. That said, there's a high chance you can't count on cafe-hopping Singaporeans for loyalty if you're only serving mediocre food that's priced more than they ought to be.

According to a Straits Times report, "almost half of the 369 cafes, coffee houses and snack bars that registered in 2011 have since closed down". ACRA has also updated that a quarter of the 391 registered in 2013 have also called it a day.Beyond the need for style and space, cafes need to remember that taste actually matters to food-crazy Singaporeans. Please. - Medha Lim

10. Will there be a local celebrity baby born in Singapore's jubilee year?

1965 movie

Yes. There  are some famous "coupling" last year. Mediacorp stars Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu. Local singers Tay Kewei and Alfred Sim. Yvonne Lim and former Taiwanese boy band member Alex Tien (She gave birth liao) . DJ  Lin Peifen and Lie Wei Xiang.

We bet our money on Peh and Qi, who will be spending a lot of time together on the movie set of 1965. - Martino Tan

11. Will there be more arts activities in 2015?

Yes. If you asked your friends, there is a marked increase in attendance, or at least openness to watch local productions, and not just those shipped-in-blockbusters at MBS ones.

If there isn't an increase, why don't you support local and start watching them? Be pleasantly surprised that Singapore has talent. - Medha Lim

12. Will a Singapore song top the iTunes chart?

Gentle Bones

Source : Gentle Bones was selected as iTunes Singapore Best new artist.

Yes. We have two iTunes champions in Shigga Shay and Gentle Bones.

Local rapper Shigga Shay did it in 2013 with his rap single, LimPeh. Gentle Bones, also known as Joel Tan, hit No.1 with his single Until We Die. Gentle Bones achieved No 1 again in 2014 with "Save Me", with his Gentle Bones EP topping the  album charts. Shigga Shay also went No. 1 again with Lion City Kia. - Martino Tan

TECHNOLOGY

13. Will we see sportsmen/sportswomen becoming millionaires in 2015?

Daryl Ice Koh

Source: Daryl "iceiceice" Koh

Yes. But it would not be in the form of your traditional sports athletes. The sportsman in question is actually a professional gamer named Daryl Koh.

Koh currently plays for a Chinese team called Vici-Gaming and the team is currently ranked within the top 3 in the world. Vici-Gaming is likely taking part in at least two competitions this year where prize pools are at least USD1 million. Should Vici-Gaming find success in both tournaments, it is likely that Koh's split of the prize pot would be close to USD1 million, on top of the hundreds of thousands he has purportedly won in 2014. - Jonathan Lim

14. Will there be more alternative news sites popping up this year?

New_sites

Yes.  2014 was a pretty boring year when it came to new alternative news sites - other than the Media Development Authority's request for both Mothership.sg and theonlinecitizen to be registered under the Broadcasting (Class Licence) - nothing significant has happened.

Not this year, however. Former Nominated Member of Parliament Viswa Sadasivan announced that he will launch a sociopolitical site named Inconvenient Questions (IQ) in late January 2015. The former television presenter and producer said his time at Feedback led him to realise 'the importance of creating more platforms where people can raise awareness for themselves and for others by asking inconvenient questions.'

Viswa's IQ may face some inconvenience of its own, if a review of the Broadcasting Act leads to new restrictions. The review was announced last year, and it is not yet known if the MDA will continue its "light-touch approach" in regulating the cyberspace.

Still, there are other things to watch for. Will former Straits Times editor Bertha Henson, who has been very active on social media, return with Breakfast Network? Will sites based overseas, like Coconuts Singapore, be subject to regulation? Will anonymous news sites be forced to reveal themselves? - Ng Yi Shu and Martino Tan

15. What apps will take centre stage in 2015?

Carousell

Source

Location-based apps like Foursquare didn't really hit the mark. The company behind it has launched a new location-based app named Swarm and it is showing promise - if users know how to fully utilise its benefits.

Another app that will garner more traction is Carousell. It already has a user base that is picking up momentum. It is only a matter of time before the big time retailers tap on the Carousell market by selling goods through it at a promotional price.

Apps have been helping us improve our daily lives by helping us find directions, check public transport timings, book taxis, and even save money by getting deals. It's time that apps also help us when we are ill. From finding a doctor, to helping you 'take a queue number' before you reach the clinic, there's a void in the app market for this kind of service. - Jonathan Lim

Additional Prediction. What are the Toto numbers you should bet on in 2015?

Based on the alignment of the planets in our solar system, it is recommended that you pick numbers 2, 13, 20, 33, 35, 40 and 41. Yes, the movement of celestial bodies can and will determine outcomes as trivial as what happens in your daily life.

What about the other much bigger planets and stars that are too far from us to directly observe? Do they have any effect on life on Earth, which is but one planet out of billions similar balls of rock in space?

You don't need to bother about those facts. You just need to be reminded that astrology is real if not why would anyone come up with it? - Belmont Lay
