Greatest mystery of the year: National Stadium defies odds to be nominated for Stadium of the Year

We need Mulder and Scully. Now.

It's only January but we already have the contender for Greatest Mystery of the Year.

Despite the leaky roof and sandy pitch, the Grand Old Dame was mysteriously nominated for the Stadium of the Year award organised by StadiumDB.com (like JobsDB but stadium).

It is not known why the organisers decided to boost the self-esteem of The Sports Hub Pte Ltd head honchos and vindicate their rather clueless assessment of the stadium's operations.

The $1.3 billion project masterpiece will fight for the top prize with 31 other global stadiums that opened in 2014 such as:

San Mamés Barria, Spain.

Arena da Baixada, Brazil.

Lhasa Stadium, China.

While some netizens have already termed this piece of stunning news as the Joke of the Year, the organisers certainly knew the obvious flaws.

And in a post last December, the website reported on Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou fiasco.

The eventual winner will be decided via an online popularity contest and by a panel of architects.

According to the website:

Each Juror ranks every stadium individually. Every nominated stadium is ranked in four categories: visual impact, relation with surroundings, innovation and value for money.

Online voting closes on Feb. 17, 2015. Results will be announced two days later.

If you are thinking of voting the National Stadium down (be patriotic a bit can? try?), tough luck. Voters are entitled to vote once; by awarding the top five venues with stars (5 to 1 star). A 1-star rating means the stadium is ranked fifth out of the 32 stadiums.

Or you can do nothing and no one will ever blame you for the inertia.
