A blogger-photographer who wrongly named and shamed runners he thought had cheated during Sunday's Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) has apologised and retracted his comments.
The blogger-photographer Christopher Koh, 52, had been taking photos at the race's 35km mark at about 8am when he spotted a group of runners who he suspected had not completed the required distance. He later put those pictures up with info about their race timings he culled from the race's website that showed they missed a few checkpoints.
But it later emerged that the "cheats" were forced to take a short cut by the race organisers for being too slow and the road used for the marathon had to be re-opened for public use at 7.30am.
Even though this hullabaloo has been put to rest, it is not quite settled as some runners are still wondering why those who did not complete the full 42.195km marathon were promised and given the medal and finisher t-shirt as shortening the distance for convenience goes against the ethics of being a long-distance run finisher.
Regardless, as this is the 13th edition of the SCMS since it started in 2014, here are 13 other things that marathoners should want badly besides a medal and t-shirt.
1. Chance to play dress up
2. Mix it up with the big boys
Ok. Maybe just taking pictures with the big boys.
3. Score some memorabilia.
4. Take the train with hordes of like-minded sadists runners early in the morning.
5. Be inspired by fellow participants.
6. Beat this ekiden team.
You know you want to.
7. Do this.
Check out the dude behind.
8. High-fiving complete strangers.
9. Mosh.
10. Grab a photo with bonafide Hollywood stars.
11. Enjoy the post event massage.
12. Spend Sunday mornings expending your kids' boundless energy.
13. Feel the happiness of completing a marathon.
