Ex-tour guide Yang Yin tries too hard to show he's a Singaporean at heart

His other crime: Wearing a Survivor Singapore T-shirt to show how S'porean he is.

Former tour guide Yang Yin, who was thrusted into Singaporeans' consciousness for his alleged manipulation of an elderly widow into giving him full control of her assets, was charged yesterday for cooking his company's books.

He faces 11 charges of falsifying receipts from 2009 to 2014 worth $28,000 purportedly paid to Young Music and Dance Studio, which provided music services. The 40-year-old was the director of the studio and will be kept in remand so as to ensure he doesn't flee Singapore.

It was through this firm that he obtained an Employment Pass in 2009. The Chinese National became a Permanent Resident in 2011.

The only remarkable thing about the fake receipts, with payments ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, was the standard of Singlish the company used. Consider these examples:

A $3,500 payment from a Ms Chua Tee Tee for "piano tuition 30 times and sound tuition 10 times".

A $3,000 payment from Heng Sah Bah for "piano tuition 30 times + free times".

One can only wonder the meaning of "sound tuition" and what the term "free times" stands for. We are not sure if it's Singlish or broken English, but it does give Singlish a bad name.

He forgot the fundamental rule of Singlish: add a lah, lor, or meh at the end of each sentence.

And in a case of trying too hard, to confirm his assimilation into local culture, Yang wore a "Survivor Singapore" T-shirt, which makes him more like a tourist hanging out in Chinatown than a true blue local.

Here's an example but instead of "outeat" was "outstudy", which was quite appropriate to his charges.

Nice try. Next time wear a suit to court.

If convicted, he faces 10 years in jail, a fine, or both. The next mention of the case will be on Nov. 5, 2014.
