10 cheapskate tricks some Singaporeans use to save money at the supermarket

Not cool, guys. Some of these tricks are actually criminal.

After speaking to a few people who work in supermarkets all around the island, here are the 10 most cheapskate things people try to pull off in the supermarkets to save a few bucks:

1. The 'I will lie to save 10 cents' shopper

BYOB

Shoppers can save 10 cents if they indicate that they brought their own grocery bags at the self checkout counters. Some cheapskates will select that option but still bag up their groceries using the store's plastic bags.

2. The prawn hiders

Some customers will fill a bag of the cheapest prawns and then 'smuggle' in a few tiger prawns into the same bag. Well done, that's actually stealing.

No, not being able to differentiate a tiger prawn and a smaller prawn is not a valid excuse to pull this stunt.

3. The DIY Barista

The lengths some people go for free stuff. There was a 'saga' some time back in the Hardwarezone forums - one forum user was apprehended by the supermarket security guard when he ground his own beans at the supermarket. Read about it here.

4. The senior citizen exploiter

On different days of the week, supermarkets will offer senior citizens discounts between 2-3% off their total bill, up to $200. Some very 'filial' children would bring their parents for these discounts to do their own grocery shopping. Some even do it for multiple families and split the bills into separate receipts of $200 each to enjoy the discount.

5. The impromptu gardener

broccoli

Some people hate to eat vegetable stems so they would do anything to avoid paying for it. They would pluck out the stems of vegetables like broccoli before weighing them. That's why you see broken vegetable stems lying around the shelves.

6. The plastic bag hoarder

You know those bags you use to weigh fruits and vegetables in? There are people who take them by the bulk for their own use. There are those who also request double bags for their groceries. Maximum value, yo.

7. The reward points farmer

When waiting in line to pay at the supermarket, their favourite line to overhear is 'No, I'm not a member'. That's when these farmers will rush towards the cashier and produce their reward card to earn some points from someone else's purchase.

If only these people were as passionate doing their day jobs.

8. The professional sampler

sampler

There are people who are dirt poor who live off samples - I've seen kindhearted store managers and assistants giving them a little extra, that's fine.

It's not OK when you look reasonably well-clothed and well-fed and eat away most of the samples. It's called free samples, not a free meal.

9. The bait-and-switch goods exchanger

Yet another trick that borders on absent-minded at best and criminal at its worst. Some people do attempt to exchange products that have sat in their homes for ages.

For example, they buy a new can of soup, and with that receipt, they try to get the supermarket to exchange a very old can that they have at home claiming that the 'new can' they bought was expired.

FYI, the store can tell whether the product you bought belongs to an older batch by its serial number.

10. Trolley thief

This needs no explaining. Have you seen trolleys around your estate but the supermarket is hundreds of metres away? Some people have the cheek to lock the trolleys outside their houses like it was their own personal property.
