Young PAP member does an AMA on Reddit, gets flamed

He did provide some insights into the party though. Kind of.

A Reddit user, using the moniker SingaporeSingapore, posted an AMA (Ask Me Anything) (http://redd.it/2go56n) on the /r/singapore subreddit on Sept. 18, 2014, claiming to be a YPAP member.

For the uninitiated, Reddit is a failed state website-forum where registered community members can submit content.

AMAs are open to Reddit users who use the site's comment system for both questions and answers, similar to a press conference, but where things can get more candid and no-holds-barred.

Despite SingaporeSingapore's admission that "PAP politicians often give PC (politically correct) answers" and his promise to "answer questions on a personal basis", he didn't get very nice responses.

Some complained on how he disappeared for half a day before replying.

First comment was posted on Sept. 18, 2014, at 4am, while SingaporeSingapore's reply only appeared on the same day at 3pm.

Some complained on how he didn’t get verified with the subreddit’s moderators.

SingaporeSingapore eventually did get verified though, by sending information on his affiliation with YPAP to the mods. So he is legit. (Comment from mod posted Sept. 18, 5pm)

Responding to Mothership.sg queries, SingaporeSingapore said: "I think they (the Reddit users) were unhappy because they thought it was a half-hearted effort by someone within the party."

There were a few funny questions though.

Some bordered on claiming that YPAP is a highly favoured association:

Others focused on the necessary transparency and accountability when it came to the number of flowers used:

We do learn some new things, however.

Degrees don’t matter in party membership:

That, well, at least this guy doesn’t participate in groupthink:

Young PAP folks agree that they are allowed to disagree.

And that it’s rather easy to apply for party membership -- just email your MP.

And that there are some weird residents:

But SingaporeSingapore somehow showed that he is passionate.

SingaporeSingapore told Mothership that he made this AMA unofficially because he "wanted to share a side of the party that people do not necessarily know."

"This AMA was done to be better address questions for the public to understand the youth wing of the PAP better," he said. "(The) party isn't just about being arrogant... I leveraged on this platform to allow people to know that the party cares, and the party has and always will strive to do it's best for it's citizens with a heart."
