To overcome declining mail volumes, SingPost increased postage prices

Consolation prize: SingPost will give six free stamps to each household.

So now we know that one, on the average, a typical Singaporean only posts six snail mails a year.

Two, the letter mailing business is a sunset industry:

"Over the years, public letter mail has been on the decline with the prevalence of multiple e-communication platforms such as e-mail, SMS and social networking sites, a trend experienced the world over," said a SingPost spokesman.

But the above reasons didn't stop postage prices from decreasing. In fact, from Oct.1, 2014, local postage prices will go up by four to 30 cents.

Okay, let's get things straight. The letter mailing is no longer in vogue and domestic mail volumes are on the decline for the second consecutive year. Yet, SingPost raises postal prices. It's true that the last time SingPost increased their postal rates was eight years ago but doesn't increasing rates make it more enticing for Singaporeans to jettison stamps and embrace electronic communication platforms instead?

But wait! To mitigate the increment, SingPost will give six stamps to each household.

The free stamps are meant to encourage more people to use the postal service, said SingPost, which also announced the first hike in postal rates in eight years.

By giving six stamps per household, it is almost sufficient for Singaporeans not to use its services for the whole of next year.

Well-played, SingPost.
