Hipsters spent more than $100,000 just on Cafe Fest S'pore VIP, regular passes alone

This is a healthy sign that hipsters can be milked.

Hipsters are big spenders.

Some 3,900 of them forked out more than $100,000 just for VIP and regular passes priced between $25 and $30 for the two-day Cafe Fest Singapore 2014 event held on Sept. 6 and 7 at the Waterfront Promenade near Marina Bay Sands.

Some 1,000 people bought $30 VIP passes, which supposedly gave them priority queues at stalls, and a VIP area where they could get some shade and enjoy the music.

About 3,000 more bought normal passes for $25 to buy food and drink.

However, the regular and VIP passes turned out to be largely useless as anyone could get into the venue for free as it was opened to the regular hoi polloi public-at-large.

This led to a massive online backlash where hipsters who shelled out for tickets are demanding refunds.

But what this inaugural Cafe Fest Singapore 2014 proves is that hipsters have spending power.

Pooling together vendors that dabble in artisanal coffee and food is a money-maker.

Future organisers take note.
