Two things you shouldn't have missed at the Commonwealth Games 2014

When sporting events are not only about sports.

The Commonwealth Games 2014 is currently being held in Glasgow, Scotland.

The biggest news for Singaporeans so far is that Joseph Schooling has smashed Singapore's national record and made it into the 50-metres Butterfly finals.

Here are two other interesting news bits that got left out in news reports:

Scottie dogs at the athletes' parade

40 Scottish Terriers were used during the athletes' parade to introduce each team's contingent. Each of the dog sported a vest carrying the participating country's name.

A total of 71 nations are competing in this year's Commonwealth Games and some of the dogs got to walk the parade twice.

Quite a cute sight. Not sure whether some Commonwealth countries with a pre-dominant Muslim population would object to this.

That kiss by John Barrowman

During the opening ceremony performance, American-Scottish actor John Barrowman (you may know him from Doctor Who or Arrow) planted a kiss on a fellow performer.

What's the big hoo-ha?

Take a look:

That's right.

Here are some stills:

Was the kiss planned? According to the CEO of the Commonwealth Games 2014, David Grevemberg, it was.

In an interview by The Independent UK, Grevemberg said, "We thought this accentuated the values of Scotland and the diversity of Scotland."

The UK paper also carried a quote from British Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg who said: "The Commonwealth core values and principles which all Commonwealth countries sign up to are clear.

They say that 'We are committed to equality and respect for the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights'.

Yet almost 80 per cent of Commonwealth countries that are represented here in Glasgow this week criminalise homosexuality in some way."

42 out of the 53 Commonwealth countries represented at the games have some form of anti-homosexual legislation.

Some people will not be pleased.
