SMRT will be rolling out its own fleet of double decker buses for the first time in Singapore on July 13, 2014.

Service 972, which is a loop service between Bukit Panjang and Orchard, will be the first service getting three buses.

This is the first of 201 such vehicles brought in by SMRT.

More of these buses will be introduced to the roads over the next three months.

The double decker buses are meant to increase commuter comfort, especially along Orchard Road during peak hours.

The nine other services which will be getting the double deckers are all long, heavily-used routes: 106, 188, 190, 850E, 951E, 960, 963, 966 and 969.

This new fleet of SMRT buses is introduced some 10 months after a high-profile incident where an irate commuter uploaded a video online purportedly showing a waiting time of an hour and 40 minutes for an SMRT bus along Scotts Road before being able to board the 14th bus available.
