Everything you need to know about the Workers’ Party CEC Election 2014 in 60 seconds

Sylvia Lim and Low Thia Khiang were re-elected as Chairman & Secretary-General respectively.

The Workers’ Party (WP) held a conference to elect its central executive council (CEC) on 27 July 2014 at the Party Headquarters.

According to TODAY, about 70 members attended the conference.

 

Below is a summary of the results:

1) WP's top leadership remains unchanged: Low Thia Khiang and Sylvia Lim were re-elected as Secretary-General and Chairman.

2) All the WP's parliamentarians were in the CEC: Low, Lim, and seven other MPs and Non-constituency MPs made it into the CEC.

3) Four new members in the CEC:  Polytechnic lecturer L Somasundaram, former CEC member John Yam, sociologist Daniel Goh and lawyer Dennis Tan.

4) Six current council members failed to be re-elected: Deputy treasurer Frieda Chan, organising secretary Ng Swee Bee, organising secretary Toh Hong Boon, vice-chair of media team Jane Leong, webmaster Koh Choong Yong, and council member Glenda Han.

5) Smaller WP CEC: The new CEC has 14 members, four fewer than the last one. CEC has a two-year term and is expected to be the one leading WP into the next General Election.

Background: Director of a telecommunication consulting firm. He is married with two children to a tax consultant. He graduated with a PhD in Philosophy from the University of South Australia.

WP Electoral History:  He joined WP in 2009 and was a former CEC member.  He was one of the candidates for Nee Soon GRC at the General Elections 2011.

4) L. Somasundaram

Background: He is a polytechnic lecturer at Temasek Polytechnic. He is married with three children to a housewife. He has a Masters in E-commerce from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

WP Electoral History: He joined WP in 2006. He was one of the candidates for Moulmein-Kallang GRC at the General Elections 2011.
