4 S'poreans that could also be used for Tiger Beer’s 'Uncage' campaign

These are the ones who have pushed the boundaries and broken free.

Tiger Beer's latest advertising campaign titled "Uncage" was produced by Australian agency Droga5.

It has been making the rounds on television and other media (such as that huge billboard you see along Keppel Road.) It is a little ironic that local ad agencies were not responsible for generating buzz about our national beer, but nevertheless, the cinematography is pretty impressive.

For Singapore's version, the video of the Tiger ad features award-winning film director Anthony Chen:

So what's "Uncage" about? Well, to sum it up, it is about "inspiring people to take their own path". Non-conformity. Daring to be different. Going against the flow. You get the idea.

Well, here are 4 Singaporeans that could also arguably have their own story about being "uncaged":

1. Roy Ngerng

Why he could: Decided to challenge PM Lee Hsien Loong head-on regarding Central Provident Fund issues instead of backing down. Became infamous overnight. Still going at it when it comes to CPF issues.

Why he would never be featured: Roy’s a former health care worker. Might not be the best person to advocate drinking alcohol. Also facing a defamation suit. Yikes.

How the script might sound like:

"I was a nobody, a small voice in vastness of the internet. A lonely blog, full of hard truths and nothing to keep me going. Then I decided to break free of the shackles. Light the flame of freedom. Tear the walls down. Speak your mind. "Risk everything", they said. And so I did. One blogger took on the Prime Minister. The world watched, a nation listened.

2. Chee Soon Juan

Why he could: This bespectacled man has been going in and out of prison more times than most Singaporeans. Therefore, by the sheer virtue of the number of times he has been released from prison, Chee deserves a spot on this list. He has literally been in and out of a cage.

Why he would never be featured: If SDP’s (Singapore Democratic Party) performance at GE2011 is an indicator, to say that Chee Soon Juan is not everyone's favourite guy is an understatement.

How the script might sound like: Prison. Life. Prison. Life again. Most would have given up on politics a long time ago. Most would have taken the easy way out. Most would have backed down. But sometimes "Most" just doesn't cut it. I know what I want. I am willing to achieve it at all costs. Embrace failure. Embrace victory. Chase it down. Don't look back.

3. Ah Meng

Why she could: Kept as in illegal pet for years (probably in a cage) until she was rescued and placed at the zoo. Which embraces an open air concept. No cages.

Why she would never be featured: She would probably have trouble doing the voice-over. Also, she passed away in 2008. RIP.

How the script might sound like: An Orang Utan. A mere monkey, they called me. Born into the shackles of slavery. Living in a cage for years. An illegal pet doomed to suffer. But I knew this life wasn’t meant for me. When life presented the opportunity, I seized it. 30 films, 300 articles, later. Ape. Icon. Mascot. Matriarch.

4. Mas Selamat

Why he could: Escaped from one of the most secure places in Singapore.

Why he would never be featured: Alleged terrorist. Need we say more?

How the script might sound like: Walls couldn’t hold me. A hundred metres of barbed wire, armed men and guard dogs stood between me and my freedom. I was put in a toilet in one of the most secure places on the planet, equipped with only the clothes on my back. But when life pushes you, you push back. I chose to go against unfathomable odds - and came out on top. Barriers. Borders. Bridges. They mean nothing. Run, go. Because when you put your mind to it, you can reach places you never thought you could.*

*This is of course, Skudai, Johor Bahru, where Mas Selamat was eventually recaptured.
