The way SAFRA priced their membership shows they don't know what they are doing

Maths fail.

As one of the 900,000 real men who has served National Service in Singapore, you'd have undoubtedly received a set of SAFRA membership renewal forms in the mail this week.

This set of forms has been thrust upon you is to encourage you, the loyal one who has served NS, to renew your SAFRA membership, which you unwittingly signed up for after you were given the NS45 SAFRA Benefits last year in a one-off recognition initiative offered by MINDEF to thank National Servicemen for their contributions to defence.

The NS45 SAFRA Benefits consisted of vouchers for all national servicemen and an offer of a year’s free SAFRA membership for eligible groups of NSmen.

But something's not quite right with how much the membership is priced:

Choice 1:

$40 for 2 years = $20/ year

Choice 2:

$155 for 5 years = $31/ year

Choice 3:

$270 for 10 years = $27/ year

Shouldn't it be cheaper the more years you sign up for a membership at one shot?

But if we assume membership cost is set to rise in the future because of inflation, it still doesn't make sense.

What gives?
