1. Singapore, a non-nuclear state with zero nuclear facilities, has been involved in the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) process since 2010, an event that is held once every two years.
2. Held at The Hague, this is the third summit and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is attending. The first two summits were held in Washington and Seoul.
3. The Fukushima disaster in 2011 has slowed plans by Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia to adopt nuclear power.
They are reassessing their plans but have not ruled it out entirely.
4. However, Vietnam has indicated it would proceed with the construction of nuclear power plants by 2020.
Once Vietnam starts building or operating its nuclear power plants, other South-east Asian countries would be motivated.
5. Malaysia has expressed reservations about committing to nuclear power, but they could build up to two nuclear reactors, with one of them located in Johor.
6. Singapore has not ruled out nuclear facilities in the future, but the government has said in 2012 that current technologies are still unsuitable after a pre-feasibility study done by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).
