Mothership Q&A: A glimpse of re:solve movie director Randy Ang

Also known as The Chillest, Most Unassuming Director in Singapore.

Belmont Lay| February 26, 07:12 AM

Randy Ang (left, in picture above) is 35 years old, a Singaporean, has zero airs about him, used to make music videos in Taiwan and is now a movie director. Last year, he also made a short film about a supermarket chicken superhero, Ayam Man.

Wearing a goatee and a placid, nonchalant look, he is beyond affable: I had absolutely no idea I was face-to-face with the director of re:solve, until he said he was.

Although he admits he is only chill when off the movie set.

re:solve, his directorial debut that is opening on Feb. 27, has been touted as a police action thriller costing $1.2 million to make and 25 days to shoot.

It stars Sunny Pang, Yuan Shuai, Pamelyn Chee, Zheng Geping and Zhu Houren, as well as Taiwan's Chris Lee Chih-cheng and Mico Chang Wei-chun and Jimmy Wong.

Mothership.sg met up with Ang after watching a screening of his movie to talk about his directorial debut, what makes him tick, his vision and also, who is his muse.

1. So, people would've heard that this movie re:solve is a police action thriller with plot twists and explosions shot entirely in Singapore, featuring the cityscape and pristine locations, something that has never been done before. Tell us, how's Pamelyn Chee like in person?

Randy: I am sorry. Are we recording this? Can you... yes please just stick to the questions we discussed earlier?

Yes? Thank you. (Pause) The production team really spent a lot of time and effort to obtained the necessary permits...what? No... About Pam? (Pause)

I have known Pamelyn for years, always wanted to work with her and I've always admired the way she wears all her roles with so much depth and confidence.

2. I understand that the movie also stars local veteran actors like Zhu Houren and Zheng Ge Ping. So, how's Taiwanese hottie Mico Chang like?

Randy: (Turns to his producer) Is this guy for real? What magazine is he from?

(The producer pulls the interviewer aside and exchange a few words. Interviewer returns. Producer gives thumbs up.)

Yes, hi, shall we continue? The veterans bring much weight and presence... (Pause) Mico is a delight to work with. She is very hardworking and dedicated.

3. There was a scene in the movie whereby the good guys had to execute a bit of a Navy Seal kind of tactical manoeuvre while carrying weapons and doing scuba diving. Was it difficult logistically to arrange for that many bikini girls to be on that boat at the same time for that scene?

resolve-04

Randy: No! What is this about? Are we going to talk about the movie or what?

(Stands and the coffee spills.)

4. Were the bikini girls really drinking champagne or was it sparkling apple juice?

resolve-05

Randy: You trying to be funny is it, huh?!

5. What kind of movie would you like to make next because it will be great if Pamelyn Chee is included in the next one as well?

Randy: Give me the recorder. Give it to me! I don't care how many people read your page. Give it to me!

6. If there is one movie you wished you can film, what would it be?

(Interviewee tries to snatch the voice recorder over unsuccessfully. He throws a punch that barely misses the interviewer's left eye. The producer steps in to drag him out of the room. Interviewee returns with more profanities and uses the word "A**hole" and a series of Hokkien profanities.)
