Mothership Q&A: A glimpse of former Foreign Minister George Yeo

Yeo's favourite movie last year was Les Miserables and would have become an architect if he was not a politician.

The year 2013 was a busy one for former Foreign Minister George Yeo, 59, who is now a businessman based in Hong Kong.

While Yeo stayed out of the public eye, he continued to be engaged with public service.

As one of the seven international experts on Pope Francis' reform commission, Yeo travelled frequently to Vatican City to help the Pope with his reform of the Vatican's administration and finances.

He was also the conference chairman of the annual Singapore Summit, where Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi was the keynote speaker.

During his free time, Yeo shares his experiences with young people regularly, meeting young Singaporeans from the China Business Youth Chapter, the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University.

Mothership.sg had a quick chat with Yeo to ask him about movies, food, and Facebook.

1. What is your favourite movie of 2013?

Les Miserables. Found the movie much better than the stage version which I had seen two or three times before.

2. You have been staying in Hong Kong the past year. Do you prefer Hong Kong Street Food or Singapore Hawker Food?

Singapore Hawker Food. There is no equivalent in HK of the Spore hawker centre or coffee shop.

3. Pope Francis was named TIME Person of the year. You met him a couple of times at the Vatican. What is the one trait that you admire about him?

His deep humanity.

4. What is the funniest request/ message you have encountered from your FB page?

A request to meet Singaporeans in Iceland after I posted eating a hot dog in Reykyavik which had received rave review from Bill Clinton. Not really funny, but almost surreal.

5. If you weren't in politics or the army, what profession would you have chosen?

Maybe architecture.

As the Minister of Information and the Arts (MITA) Minister, Yeo conceptualised and built the Esplanade.
