A Singaporean woman has successfully harnessed the power of virality on social media for her personal cause.

The 26-year-old first found out she was adopted during a heated spat with her adoptive father four years ago.

After that revelation, she searched for her biological family but did not get far and there were no leads.

Her only clues when she set out on her mission was her real mother's name and last-known address that was hidden under corrective tape in a health booklet.

Taking a chance, she turned to Facebook in August this year.

The woman, who does not want to be identified because her adoptive parents are unaware she has reconnected with her biological family, said she was inspired to search for her roots after seeing other people successfully do it in the United States.

At the end of August this year, the senior reservation executive created a poster with a photo of her face, contact details and information on her birth mother.

She printed 20 copies and distributed them to residents staying in a four-storey block in Yishun, which was her mother's last-known address.

She then posted her plea on Facebook and urged her 500 friends to share the post. Her appeal quickly took off.

Shared 5,000 times within three days, it was also featured on Streetdirectory.com's Facebook page when the mapping website helped her cause.

The social media platform gave her search the boost it needed.

On Sept. 26, she received a call from someone claiming to have information. She was introduced to her brother that day and met her biological mother that night.

In all, she was reunited with her biological family in a month.

Her biological mother resides in Toa Payoh with her two teenage children, who are her younger siblings.
