S'pore First World Problem: Not enough poor people to donate to

Singaporean Muslims made a special donation to the Batam Grand Mosque instead.

For this year's Idul Adha, also known as the Islamic Day of Sacrifice, a group of Singaporean Muslims made a special donation to the Batam Grand Mosque to fulfill their religious obligations.

The reason?

Singaporean Muslims had difficulty finding sufficiently poor recipients in Singapore to give their sacrificial animal.

So, they travelled 20 kilometers south to Batam to perform their Idul Adha duty.

On Hari Raya Haji Tuesday, more than 50 Singaporean tourists had donated three bulls and 50 goats to be slaughtered at the Grand Mosque, a Batam Tourism Bureau head said.

Over the past few years, the tourism bureau, in cooperation with travel agencies, has been luring more Singaporeans to donate their animals to people in Batam by offering Idul Adha-themed tours.

This was because Singaporeans often preferred to send their sacrificial animals to Batam, as there were too few mustahiq, or rightful recipients, in Singapore.
