Singaporeans are getting so hot and bothered by the news that a dating website that facilitates extramarital affairs is planning for a launch in Singapore next year -- that they have set up a Facebook page to petition against it.

The website, Ashley Madison, is Canadian-based and has over 21 million users worldwide. Its slogan is "Life is short. Have an affair."

Although it has already expanded to other Asian countries and territories such as Japan and Hong Kong, the plan to operate in Singapore is still not set in stone.

However, local reports of the website's rumoured launch has resulted in at least one Facebook page started today to petition against it.

Called "Block Ashley Madison - Singapore", the Facebook page is touted as "a Petition that aims to gather sound-minded people to express our objection to the establishment of the shameless company - Ashley Madison, that thrives on shattered marriages, in Singapore".

It is not known if or even how Singapore's largely conservative authorities will address the anxiety the website is causing.

The Media Development Authority (MDA) is powerless in governing the content within the website if the server is not hosted in Singapore.

But it does have the power and the ability to block it from being accessed locally if public interest and morality are concerned.

A list of porn websites are blocked from access within Singapore. This is more a symbolic gesture to show Singapore's light touch approach to censorship.
