The former chief of protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) was charged today with 60 counts of cheating, totalling about S$80,000.

Sixty-year-old Lim Cheng Hoe is accused of submitting false expense claims between February 2008 and May 2012. The false expense claims includes inflating the quantity of pineapple tarts and wines bought and used for official trips and visits.

Lim claimed more than 10,000 boxes of pineapple tarts but used about 2,200 boxes. He only used 89 out of 248 bottles of wine claimed.

Lim was the protocol chief for about 10 years. He headed MFA's protocol directorate, which was responsible for organizing ministerial and presidential trips overseas, and for overseeing the diplomatic protocol affairs.

According to an earlier new report, a source told Shin Min Daily that Lim was "waiting for retirement, so it wouldn't make sense for him to have done such a thing."

Lim is now on bail and his lawyer asked for the case to be adjourned for him to make representations.

His police bail of $100,000 has been extended and a pre-trial conference has been set for Oct 25.
