The owner of one of Singapore's most iconic news-stand located in Holland Village, Periathambi G., died on Thursday.

He was 70.

Known as Mr Thambi, he had been suffering from diabetes and kidney failure for more than 10 years.

He fell into a coma on Thursday evening and died later that night.

His retail business, Thambi Magazine Store, opened in 1996, was part of his family's news distributing tradition.

Thambi's father was a newspaper deliveryman when the area was a kampung.

After Thambi Magazine Store was established, it became one of two iconic news-stands in Holland Village.

The other was Mama Joe Magazine Corner, which was located opposite Thambi Magazine Store and closed down in 2007.

After which, Thambi Magazine Store took over its shop premises at Holland Road Shopping Centre, where rental at one point in the mid-2000s was about $26,000 a month.

In its hey day in the mid-2000s, both shops were at the entrance to Holland Village at the junction of Holland Avenue and Lorong Liput. They carried 7,000 magazine titles between them.

Today, Thambi Magazine Store carries 4,000 publications from around the world.

Mr Thambi's wake was held at Holland Drive.

The procession on Saturday stopped outside his shop and traced one of his old newspaper delivery routes before leaving for the Mandai Crematorium.

The news-stand reopens today.
