Exploring S’pore on a longboard

Or exploring the uses of a longboard in Singapore.

Many friends get sucked into black holes on YouTube where they end up watching videos of cats jumping into small boxes or people popping massive pus-filled pimples. Or hot girls biting their lips.

I, however, fell into a black hole of longboarding videos.

Strange, I know! But there was something different and appealing about the way these videos were shot.

The big difference? Felines? Overactive sebaceous glands? Hot girl's lips? No! Nature!

Instead of skate parks and concrete slabs, longboarding videos often takes place on beautiful, long, winding, country roads.

I'm getting ahead of myself. What is a longboard, right? Simply put, longboards are longer, bigger and heavier than skateboards.

That means you can do tricks on a longboard like a skateboard -- provided if you want to fall over and kill yourself.

Hence, longboards are not like skateboards as they offer more stability and allow the rider to speed downhill. As a bonus, the wider, softer longboard wheels allow the rider to maintain speed and simulate a ‘surfy’ ride, making it a great commuter board for shorter distances.

Of course, Singapore doesn't have long winding country roads. But we have scenic, less populated, yet skate-able routes around Singapore.

This route is perfect for beginners. It is 1.5km long. Quiet. Scenic. It has great picnic spots. There's a restaurant on the jetty. The park is dog friendly. But a sign says you cannot do kite-flying. That confused me (really though, why not?).

I do not recommend skating here alone at night. A little creepy and under-lit, but maybe that’s just me. Another tip, don’t go during low tide, it smells like a fishing boat!

One of my favourite routes. And the longest at about 8 kilometers!

I usually start out at Mountbatten or Stadium MRT and follow the river all the way to Boat Quay for a refreshing, well-deserved drink! From Saturday to Thursday Prince of Wales has one for one bottled beers from 9pm – midnight! Live music on some nights too.

Labrador Park

I’ve heard of Labrador Park, but I did not know you could see Harborfront from there, or that it connected to VivoCity.

A sunny day means it gets awfully hot despite the sea breeze. If you want to go on a hike, it is worth visiting some lookout points along the forest trails. I love routes that end with good food! There is Food Republic Beer Garden at St James Powerhouse just across the overhead bridge.

Wanna skate/ bike/ blade? The Singapore Longboard Girls Crew meets to skate or go on trips to other countries.

If you are not a girl, or want something more mixed in terms of activities, there is the Couchsurfing group that organises skating /biking/ rollerblading trips around the island.
